Keeping Your Rockstar Games Account Secure
Learn how to improve your Rockstar Games account security.
December 4, 2025
Email Address
The email address you select should be secure and from a well-known domain with a unique password connected to it, and has 2FA enabled. This email address should be one you will continue to have access to. For that reason, we suggest avoiding using a school or workplace domain that you can lose access to.
Passwords
Use a unique password for your Rockstar Games account. We recommend that your password has the following: 8–30 characters, including one uppercase character and one number.
To help manage your passwords and keep them as secure as possible, we suggest utilizing a password manager.
Account Sharing and Third-Party Access
Do not share your passwords with others, regardless of whether or not you know the person, as access grants the potential for changes that could lock you out. Purchasing third-party keys and/or accounts from other sellers is against our policy. Should anything happen to your account, we are unlikely to be able to help you recover your account and game progress.
VPN Usage is also highly discouraged and could prohibit access to certain parts of the platform.
2-Step Verification
2-Step Verification (also often referred to as Two Factor Authentication, 2FA, or MFA) adds an extra layer of protection and is the best way to secure your account.
- Make sure to link a Two Factor method that you will have access to long term (i.e., use an authenticator that is on a device you will certainly have access to).
- Activate cloud backup and/or ability to sync codes across your devices if your authenticator offers this. This ensures that if you lose access to the device your authenticator is on, you will be able to restore your authenticator to a new device.
Monitor Your Account
Monitor your account for indications of suspicious activity such as:
- Changes to your email address that you didn't personally authorize
- Third party connections that you did not authorize
- A login from a device that you aren't familiar with
If you do see any of these things, change your password immediately and make sure to set up 2FA.
General Security Best Practices
- Always update your OS, browsers, and apps as they could contain critical security updates
- Continuously update any antivirus or anti-malware software you have
- Use legitimate browsers and secure devices
-
Exercise extra precautions when using public devices or Wi-Fi (e.g., at
internet cafes and/or libraries).
- Use a secure browser or browse in incognito.
- Never enter or save personal information on a public device.
- Always delete any data you may have produced during your session and if you logged in, be sure to log out.
- Don't leave the computer unattended and open for others to see.
Phishing Scams
Beware of emails that are masquerading as Rockstar official emails. Double-check any emails that are asking for your password and/or your login information. Check the email domain and the links before opening the email, downloading any attachments, and/or providing more information.
Rockstar emails should only come from the following domains:
- rockstargames.com
